I am always on the lookout for something new to read. I know there are many great books from the past that I have not visited; however, there is something exciting about being one of the first to read a newly-published novel. Here are five books I have read in the last several months and I think these are the top 5 must read new fiction you can read in 2024. Hope you enjoy them!
1. The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon is a fabulous read; it’s historical fiction at its finest. Set in 1789 Maine, the actual journals of mid-wife Martha Ballard provide the reader with a riveting picture of a small village that suffers great turmoil when a body is found frozen in the ice. And that’s just the start!
2. The Vacation House by Jane Shemilt
The Vacation House is not a light-hearted romp through Greece. Instead it’s a novel that features a dark look inside a troubled marriage, a terrible secret, and ultimately, sweet revenge. It was a little slow at the beginning—I had a hard time keeping track of everyone—but it was well worth the effort. By the time I was a quarter of the way through, I couldn’t put it down. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
3. First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston
First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Lucca Marino, daughter of a dying mother, living in a trailer park, still in high school, learns to steal for a living. She is good, and when she is approached by an anonymous stranger to get into the game full-time, she doesn’t hesitate. As she moves from one theft to the next, the stakes rise. By the end of the novel, she must choose between her new life with her amazing new boyfriend, or continuing the life of danger and excitement. This is a well-written book that will keep you guessing to the last page. I loved it, and I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
4. Queens of London by Heather Webb
Queens of London by Heather Webb is the story of Alice Diamond and her band of thieves in 1920’s London. Based on real folks, this is entertaining historical fiction with a cast of characters from a variety of backgrounds. Alice leads The Forty Elephants, a gang that actually existed going back to Victorian times. She is smart, hard, and ambitious, and when she comes up against Lilian, the first female cop at Scotland Yard, she has met her match. Throw in an Indian orphan who has run away from her mean uncle, and you have a great story. I loved it!
5. The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins
The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins looks awfully good. A wealthy aristocrat dies, an adopted son turns his back on his old life and seeks anonymity as a teacher, and questions arise about what happened to the old lady’s four husbands, all of whom died mysteriously. Full disclosure: I am in the middle of this novel, and should be finished this week.
Happy Reading! I hope you enjoy these recommendations.
